Tavarede is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz .

geography

The municipality represents the northeast part of the urban area of the district of Figueira da Foz, together with Buarcos , São Julião , Vila Verde and São Pedro . In its northeastern foothills, the relatively hilly area becomes more rural. Its southwest border is 3 km from the mouth of the Mondego in the city center of Figueira.

history

Finds show that the area was already settled in the Iron Age . A fortified place has been known here since the 7th century, which was destroyed and disintegrated with the conquest by the Moors from the beginning of the 8th century. After the founding of the state of Portugal, the area came under King D.Sancho to the Church (Sé) of Coimbra , and has been repopulated since the 12th century. In 1516 Tavarede received city rights (foral) by D. Manuel I.

In 1540, António Fernandes de Quadros, lord of Tavarede and Vila Verde, built his residential and government palace here, the Paço de Tavarede . From here the area was administered to Figueira da Foz.

In 1771 Figueira da Foz was elevated to vila , and the seat of the district came from Tavarede to Figueira. After the Liberal Revolution in Portugal and the end of the Miguelist War in 1834, the Tavarede district was dissolved and joined that of Figueira.

In the course of the rapid expansion of the city of Figueira da Foz since the late 20th century, its quarters have moved closer, so that Tavarede has now become one of the most numerically significant residential areas in the city.

Culture, sports and sights

In the municipality are the swimming and sports complex of Ginásio Clube Figueirense , the sports complex Parque desportivo da Quinta do Paço , and the sports complexes (Polidesportivos) in Chã, Carritos and Avenida 1º de Maio, some of the most important sports facilities in the district in Tavarede. The Estádio Municipal José Bento Pessoa is also located here, the venue for the professional football team of Naval 1º de Maio .

The Sociedade de Instrução Tavaredense , founded by José da Silva Ribeiro in 1904 , has since been an important cultural engine of the community, with its own amateur theater. A number of other associations are active in the municipality, including the Goju-Ryu Karaté Clube Figueirense , the Grupo Desportivo e Recreativo da Chã sports club, the Portuguese Scouts Group No. 30 ( Associação de Escoteiros de Portugal - Grupo 30 ), the sports aviation club Aero Clube da Figueira , the regional amateur radio association Associação de Radioamadores da Costa de Prata , and various music associations, especially in the towns of Tavarede and Carritos. The two most important associations in the district, Ginásio Clube Figueirense and Naval 1º de Maio, are also based here.

Paço de Tavarede Palace was built in 1540 by António Fernandes de Quadros , a noble of Spanish descent who was rewarded for his services to the Portuguese crown. The palace complex was rebuilt several times, with the facade redesign at the end of the 18th century and the neo-Romanueline reconstructions in the 19th century being the most important changes. The Paço remained in family ownership until the death of the last successor in 1903 . After changing hands several times, it was acquired by the city administration in 1981, the Câmara Municipal of Figueira da Foz. The building was listed as a historical monument in 1982 and reopened in 2006 after lengthy renovation work. The city administration now maintains various youth and sports departments, administrative rooms and civil services here.

Also worth seeing are the Azulejos- filled Fonte de Tavarede fountain, built in 1876 , the simple chapel Capela de Santo Aleixo from the 16th century, which was built on an older chapel and contains a baptismal font that bears the date 1600, and finally the Parish church Igreja Paroquial S. Martinho , which dates from the 11th century, but is probably older in its origins, as evidences from the period before the independence of Portugal suggest. All three buildings are under monument protection.

The town of Tavarede, which is characterized by residential blocks, is reminiscent of its agricultural past, as is the monument to the farmer, Monumento ao Cavador .
