Lavos is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz .

geography

The place is about 7 km from Figueira da Foz ; however, since the old bridges were demolished and the feeder bridges to the Ponte Edgar Cardoso were built, the distance has increased to 11 km. Lavos is located south of Figueira inland in the flat marshland , about 4 km from the municipality's beach, the Costa de Lavos .

history

Lavos, still under the name Lavos da Marinha , first awarded in 1217 by D. Afonso II. Administrative rights ( Foral ), 1519 in the course of administrative reform by King Manuel I were renewed, under the name Lavãos . In the middle of the 18th century, the parish settlements gradually disappeared and the church was relocated in 1632, and with it the town. Since the beginning of the 19th century, extensive afforestation and dune fortifications prevented another sanding-up after the church and districts had to be relocated again to Santa Luzia in 1743.

In 1808, the British Army Leader Wellesley, later General Wellington , landed in the area of Figueira da Foz for a second time to take action against another Napoleonic invasion. In August 1808 he set up camp in Lavos for a few days.

Until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in Portugal in 1822, Lavos and Paião formed a joint circle (concelho), which in 1853 was incorporated into the circle of Figueira da Foz. Lavos has remained an independent municipality (freguesia) to this day, but parts of its municipality have been spun off over the years and form their own municipalities as Marinha das Ondas and São Pedro .

In 2009 Lavos was elevated to a vila (small town).

Culture, sports and sights

The Museu Municipal Santos Rocha maintains with its branch of the Núcleo Museológico do Sal an open-air museum in part of the local saltworks .

The Igreja Paroquial (German: parish church) of Santa Luzia from the 18th century contains a font from the 16th century, various front and side reredos made of marble and gold-coated wood from the 18th century, and a painting from the year 1789 of the church patroness Nossa Senhora da Conceição (German: Our Lady of Conception) from Pascoal Parente in the right aisle. Also worth seeing is the coffered ceiling made of 45 different pieces, and the organ made of gilded carving (talha dourada). The church has been a listed building as Imóvel de Interest Público since 2001. The Posto da Guarda Fiscal de Lavos customs police building, built in 1947, is another listed building.

A large number of clubs are active in the municipality, including the sports clubs Sport Clube de Lavos and Clube Desportivo da Costa de Lavos , the folk dance clubs Rancho Folclórico As Salineiras de Lavos and Rancho Folclórico e Etnográfico de Lavos , the motorcycle club Motoclube do Sul do Mondego , and the Hunters Association Clube de Caçadores do Sul do Mondego .
