Marinha das Ondas is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz .

geography

Located 17 km south of the town of Figueira da Foz, it is also the southernmost municipality in the Figueira district. Above all, its wide sandy beach and the dunes - with the adjacent forest areas dominated by local pine species - determine the landscape.

history

The name of the municipality probably goes back to salt deposits in a sea bay that was nearby at the time, where two settlements were formed, Marinha de Cima (German: Upper Salt Bank) and Marinha de Baixo (German: Lower Salt Bank), which then closed Marinha das Ondas (English: salt bank of the waves) have grown together. The oldest place in the municipality was probably on Praia da Leirosa beach , where seasonal occasional fishermen from inland created temporary homes.

At the time of the Napoleonic invasions at the beginning of the 19th century, the area was still sparsely populated. From 1865 the fortified house settlements became more numerous. Until 1853, the municipality belonged to the common district of Lavos and Paião , and since then has been part of the district of Figueira da Foz with them. In 1928 Marinha das Ondas became an independent municipality in the Figueira district.

In 2009 Marinha das Ondas was elevated to a vila (small town).

Culture, sports and sights

Announcement of the motocross races for the Portuguese championship, 2013

The interesting chapel Capela de Nossa Senhora das Ondas has been a listed building since 2011. Built in 1774, it was partially burned out during the Napoleonic invasion in the early 19th century. In 1958 it became a parish church before it was demoted to a chapel again in 1961, with the inauguration of the new, larger parish church Igreja Paroquial .

The traditional fishing with small boats using small trawls, called Pesca Xávega , is increasingly becoming a tourist attraction. On the beach of Leirosa, which has been awarded the Blue Flag , the infrastructures are also being expanded, such as a parking lot for mobile homes and caravans , or cultural and dining options. The beach Praia da Leirosa also regarded as surf spot . There are efforts and initial investigations to make the beach even more suitable for surfing by building an artificial reef . The considerations are also related to efforts to contain the threats posed by the sea to the beach and dunes and to prevent possible nuisance from the paper mills.

Since the 1990s, the festival- like ExpoOndas has taken place every year at the beginning of August, an exhibition for local industry (ceramics, paper, food industry) and local handicrafts (ceramics, floriculture, handicrafts , agriculture, etc.), at which the local associations (sport, folk dance , etc.) , Art and culture), restaurants and citizens' initiatives.

The Portuguese Scout Group No. 1224 has been based here since 1995 .

In Marinha das Ondas there are regular races for the national motocross championship.

administration

Marinha das Ondas is the seat of a municipality of the same name ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz , in the Coimbra district . On June 30, 2011 the community had 3179 inhabitants on an area of 27.4 km².

The following places are in the municipality of Marinha das Ondas:

  • Marinha das Ondas
  • Matas
  • Cip residues
  • Casal de Sao Jorge
  • Cabeço da Pedra
  • Matos
  • Canto das Pinas
  • Sampaio
  • Praia da Leirosa

traffic

With the decision of the CP in 2012 to use Linha do Oeste only for goods traffic in the future, the municipality loses the nearby railway connection at Louriçal station . The connected Ramal-do-Louriçal line is already used only for freight traffic to the paper mills.

The national road N109 runs through the municipality, as does the A17 motorway , to which the municipality has its own driveway.

economy

The nearby paper and cellulose mills owned by Soporcel (since 1984) and the Altri subsidiary Celbi (1965) are important employers. The meat product manufacturer Lusiaves is also important, alongside companies in logistics, wood processing and the food industry. Fishing and agriculture have clearly lost their importance and are only operated as a sideline. Viticulture is still noteworthy. Tourism has gained in importance, especially on the nationally known beach Praia da Leirosa .
