Quiaios is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz .

geography

The place is 10 km from Figueira da Foz and 3 km from the municipal beach, the Praia de Quiaios . With the ridge of the Serra da Boa Viagem on the left side, the place is in the flat coastal area that stretches north to the Ria de Aveiro . The 44 ha large lake Lagoa da Braças is located in the wooded dune areas of Quiaios, the approximately 12 km long and 6,000 ha large Mata nacional das dunas de Quiaios .

history

First mentions of the place can be found in records from the ninth century. In 1122 Queen Teresa bequeathed the area to her lover, but after her deposition by her son, Portugal's first King D. Alfonso Henriques , the latter gave the area to the monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra . In 1514 Quiaios received city ​​rights ("Foral") for the first time from King Manuel I.

The independent district ( concelho ) of Quiaios existed until 1836 , before it was dissolved and incorporated into the district of Maiorca . In 1853 this was also dissolved and its area including Quiaios' was assigned to the district of Figueira da Foz.

Surname

The legend has it that King D. Alfonso Henriques in his hunt for Moors in the Reconquista in the area of Quiaios be find anything and have exclaimed loudly: Aqui há-os! At Largo Pe, in the center of Quiaios . In the past these were jugs, donkeys or agricultural implements. On the evening of the first Friday of every September an ancient market day takes place in the market hall of Quiaios, during which traditional food and products are offered by market women in costumes and traditional customs are remembered. Every second Sunday of the month there is also a flea market in the central square of Quiaios.

Quiaios is also known for its sausage specialties, some of which are marketed nationwide, for example in the pingo-doce supermarkets.

Every year, the Woodrock Rock Festival takes place in Praia de Quiaios , which is mainly dedicated to stoner rock , doom metal and related varieties of metal and rock music. The eighth edition of the music festival is planned for July 16-18, 2020 . a. the bands Witchcraft from Sweden, Jucifer from the USA and Zaum from Canada.

economy

In earlier times agriculture was the main occupation in the municipality, today this is only the case for 5% of the local population. The fishery, which was operated until the 1960s, is now only a little and sideline. Today, jobs are mainly found in the local retail trade and in the joinery, baking, construction and chemical and plastics processing industries. Tourism has grown in importance in recent years.
