Cabo Mondego
The Cabo Mondego is a headland or cape with a lighthouse on the Portuguese Atlantic coast. It is located in the Figueira da Foz district , west of the city of Coimbra , north of the mouth of the Mondego River. It was declared a natural monument on October 3, 2007.
The cape has already been included in the list of Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points , as an illustrative example for the Middle Jurassic. An application for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site is also pending . These efforts conflict with the economic interests of the Cimpor , which quarries limestone here to produce calcium oxide . Coal was mined here until the 1970s.
From Cape Mondego, the Serra da Boa Viagem nature reserve rises until it reaches its maximum height of 261.88 meters.
