Carlos Manuel de Marques Paião (born November 1, 1957 in Coimbra , † August 26, 1988 in Rio Maior ) was a Portuguese singer and songwriter.

Career

Paião was born in Coimbra and spent his childhood in Ílhavo , where his parents were from, and Cascais . At an early age he began to compose his own songs. He received first recognition in 1978 as the winner of the Illiabum club's song festival.

In 1980 he took part in the Festival da Canção for the first time. He won the festival with the title Playback the following year and represented his country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin . With nine points he was penultimate. In his own country the poor performance did not detract from his popularity and in the same year he landed another hit with the title Pó de Arroz .

He has also written songs for other artists, including Herman José ( A Canção do Beijinho , 1980) and Amália Rodrigues ( O Senhor Extra-Terrestre , 1982). A first own album was released in 1982 under the title Algarismos , but did not achieve the success hoped for. In 1983 he achieved third place at the Festival da Canção at the side of Cândida Branca Flor with the patriotic title Vinho do Porto, Vinho de Portugal . In that year he completed his medical studies at the University of Lisbon , but then devoted himself entirely to music. In 1984 he composed the music for the fictional character Serafim Saudade for Herman José's television show Hermanias . In 1985 he took part in the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo .

On August 26, he was killed in a traffic accident on National Road 1 near Rio Maior when a truck collided head-on with his car while overtaking. He was buried in São Domingos de Rana (Cascais).

15 years after his death, a compilation was published in 2003 with a selection of more than 300 songs he had composed. In 2008 various musicians recorded an album with interpretations of his songs.
