José Cid

José Cid (* 4. February 1942 in Chamusca as José Albano Cid Ferreira de Tavares ) is a Portuguese singer and composer .

Life

After studying law, he co-founded the style-defining Portuguese progressive rock band Quarteto 1111 in 1967, in which he worked as a composer, singer and keyboardist . From the early 1970s he also produced solo albums in this genre. From the mid-1970s he turned to more commercial sound with his new band Green Windows . The group took part in the Festival da Canção in 1974 , as a solo singer Cid tried again in 1977, and in 1980 he emerged victorious. Therefore he was allowed to compete for Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest 1980 with the hit Um grande, grande amor and reached seventh place.

Titles written by him then took part in several editions of the Festival da Canção and some made it into the final selection, his title Se eu te pudesse abraçar by the group Alma Lusa won the preselection and represented Portugal at the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest .

José Cid has established himself as one of the most famous pop-rock singers in Portugal and has released a large number of albums and has performed numerous live and on television programs. He also received some international attention, especially among friends of progressive rock.

In 2019 he was awarded an Emmy for a telenovela theme song and received the Latin Grammy Award for his life's work in 2019 , after Carlos do Carmo (2014) as the second Portuguese Grammy winner.

José Cid is in his fourth marriage to the East Timorese journalist, painter and politician Maria Gabriela Guterres Viegas Carrascalão, who comes from the Carrascalão family. He has a daughter, Ana Sofia (* 1964), who comes from his first marriage and has a son.
