Vânia Fernandes (* 1985 in Funchal , Madeira ) is a Portuguese singer. In 2008 she represented her home country Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade .

biography

Vânia Fernandes was born to a mechanic and a seamstress on the Portuguese Atlantic island of Madeira. The Portuguese celebrated her breakthrough in 2007 when she won the talent show Operação Triunfo . Ten years had passed between this success and her first music competition: in 1997 Fernandes made her debut appearance at the Funchal a Cantar Festival , named after her hometown on Madeira. During this time, she kept switching between different genres. In addition to pop and rock songs , her repertoire mainly includes fado and jazz tracks . Fernandes' diploma certified that she has an extraordinary and versatile voice: From 2001 to 2007 the 23-year-old studied singing at the Madeira Conservatory.

Eurovision Song Contest

The 23-year-old singer won the 44th edition of the Festival da Canção with a landslide victory . Her song Senhora do mar received 17,650 votes - more than 10,000 more than the runner-up Alex Smith with Obrigatório ter . Fernandes' winning titles were written by Carlos Coelho and Andre Babic . For the Croatian Babic it is already the fourth participation in the competition in six years: In 2003 the composer wrote Više nisam tvoja for the Croatian candidate Claudia Beni , in 2005 the group Feminnem Call Me sang for Bosnia-Herzegovina and last year Alenka Gotar performed with the Babic title Cvet z juga for Slovenia .

Since Vânia Fernandes qualified in the top ten from the ESC semi-finals on May 22, 2008 , she took part in the final of the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest on May 24 . There she finished 13th in the victory of the Russian Dima Bilan .

After the Eurovision Song Contest

Fernandes took several years to write her first album. In 2011 Coração Do Alto Mar was finally released .

In 2018 Fernandes was in the musical Fado Uma Forma de Vida , a tribute to the Fado legend Amália Rodrigues , at the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias in Funchal .
