Carlos Coelho

Carlos Coelho (born May 20, 1960 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese politician of the PSD . He has been a member of the European Parliament since 1998, where he is a member of the Executive Committee of the Group of the European People's Party ( EPP) . In 1994 Coelho was already a member of the European Parliament , from January 11th to July 18th.

Coelho is a trained insurance specialist , but only worked in this profession from 1980 to 1981.

Political party

From 1986 to 1988 Coelho was chairman of the youth organization of his party PSD. Other positions were deputy head of the study office, member of the party district committee of the city of Santarèm and member of the national board of the PSD.

Mandates and government positions

In 1977, at the age of 17, Coelho was a member of the Sintra parish council . A year later he became a member of the community assembly. At 19, he was one of the youngest MEPs in the Portuguese Parliament to date . From 1987 to 1995 he occupied the position of chairman of the parliamentary committee on youth. From 1989 until the election to the European Parliament, Coelho was deputy group leader of the PSD. In 1994 Coelho was also deputy state secretary for education for one year.

  • Chairman of the Temporary Committee on the alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners
  • Member of the Committee on Citizens' Rights, Justice and Home Affairs
  • Member of the delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly
  • Deputy in the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy

Other positions

From 1988–1992 Coelho was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese-Atlantic Association of Young Political Leaders. Since 2000 he has been deputy chairman of the Francisco Sà Carneiro Institute (corresponds to the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Germany).
