Insurance specialist (officially certified insurance specialist IHK , former insurance specialist (BWV) ) is a training standard in the insurance industry .

The qualification as an insurance specialist is one of the prerequisites for exercising the profession of insurance broker according to § 34d GewO as well as for the insurance advisor according to § 34e GewO.
Legal
With the implementation of the EU Directive 2002/92 / EC on insurance brokerage (European Brokerage Directive) into German law on the revision of the insurance brokerage law of October 25, 2006 (Bundestag printed paper No. 16/3162), it is prescribed that insurance brokers according to Section 34d Paragraph 2 No. 4 GewO have to prove a suitable examination for the performance of such services.
exam
The insurance specialist examination was held from March 1991 to September 2007 by the Vocational Training Center of the German Insurance Industry (BWV). Between 1991 and 2007 (including the June 2007 exam) a total of 138,945 candidates took the insurance specialist examination (BWV). Of these, 107,966 participants passed the exam.
Since September 2007 the test has been carried out by the local chambers of industry and commerce (IHK) with the vocational training center of the German insurance industry as a service provider. Proof of such a passed exam is a certificate of competence according to § 34d Abs. 2 Nr. 4 of the trade regulations and is one of the qualifications that insurance brokers need to issue the business registration .
The exam consists of a written part and a practical part. The practical part of the exam is a simulation of a customer consultation. The candidate should prove that he is able to analyze the client's situation with regard to security and provision, to develop an appropriate solution and to conduct a consultation. After successfully passing the IHK exam, the candidate receives a certificate stating that he has successfully passed the "Certified Insurance Specialist IHK" examination and has thus acquired the qualifications required to practice as an insurance broker.
Duration and costs
The training is part-time, ie usually as part of a practical insurance-specific activity and lasts between 12 and 24 months. At the end there is a final written and a practical (oral) exam. The costs of the IHK examination amount to an average of 250 to 350 euros. The training costs of approx. 750 to 1650 euros, depending on the type of seminar (for online seminars, training courses, material, etc.), are added to this sum. In the case of one-company and group representatives (exclusive brokers), the expenses are often borne by the insurance company .
