Paulo de Carvalho performed his song E Depois do Adeus ( And after saying goodbye ) on April 6, 1974 at the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 (he reached 14th place - ABBA won ). Eighteen days later, on the eve of April 25, 1974 , the song was played on Portuguese radio: this, together with the song Grândola, Vila Morena by José Afonso , was the agreed secret signal for the overthrow of the Salazarist dictatorship , known as the Carnation Revolution .

Paulo de Carvalho has been known as a singer in Portugal since the 1960s. His style was initially based on Anglo-American pop music (from 1963 with the beat band Sheiks ), after 1974 on current Portuguese topics and traditions such as classic fado , to which he has mainly devoted himself since the 1980s. He recorded individual songs with Carlos do Carmo , Dulce Pontes and others.
