Sheiks (also Os Sheiks and The Sheiks , dt .: (The) sheikhs) was a Portuguese Beat - band from Lisbon . As the most successful Portuguese beat band, and because of their musical style, they are often referred to as the Portuguese Beatles . They still occur sporadically.

Band history

Until 1965

The group was founded in Lisbon in 1963. Carlos Mendes and Fernando Chaby had already played together in the Windsors beat band when they formed the Sheiks with Paulo de Carvalho and Jorge Barreto in 1963 . All members were 16 to 17 years old and were followers of pop quartets of the time like The Shadows and The Beatles , from which they were inspired. The Sheiks played at school celebrations and student parties, where they sprinkled their first original compositions between their versions of well-known songs by groups such as The Searchers , The Everly Brothers , The Beach Boys or Roy Orbison . They became the figurehead of the burgeoning youth scene on Avenida de Roma and the projection screen for their cosmopolitan longings. The reason was not only their local origins and their musical style, but especially their self-assured compositions, written in English , and their relaxed, self-confident demeanor. They were thus in line with the internationally spreading British Invasion and were the most serious names in Portugal's pop music called Yéyé , alongside bands such as Conjunto Académico João Paulo , Conjunto Mistério , or the Quinteto Académico .

In 1964 they appeared on the radio program 23a hora (German: 23rd hour) by Rádio Renascença and made their first recordings there. The record company Valentim de Carvalho then signed the band and produced several EPs with them from 1965 to 1967 . In 1964 the band had changed their composition, and Edmundo Silva had come into the band after he had already written a number of songs for them. On the first EP in 1965, they interpreted Gerswhin's Summertime with a new line-up , contemporary and in the original English, while the other three pieces were self-written, but sung by them with a Brazilian accent, as they did not consider Portuguese to be suitable for the pop music of the time .

Their second EP with four self-written English-language pieces established the sheiks' fame that has continued to this day. In particular, the two tracks Missing you and Tell me bird were published several times in England, Spain, France and Brazil, and are considered the most distinctive songs of the group. In France, the single reached the highest sales outside of Portugal, and briefly made it into the local hit parade.

1966-1968

Motivated by the looming international success, the group recorded more EPs, in addition to a single dedicated to the successful Portuguese national soccer team and their most famous player at the 1966 soccer World Cup , top scorer Eusébio . The Sheiks again interpreted international successes, now partly with an electronic organ , and recorded the last Portuguese-language piece with A Mala (dt .: The Pocket) that became known among beat lovers in Spain. In November they took on a month-long engagement at the Bill Bouquet Club in Paris , run by Sylvie Vartan and Eddie Barclay , where they wrote songs, and recorded an EP released in 1967. However, they did not accept any further offers afterwards, and instead of pursuing an international career, they returned to Lisbon in December 1966. Carlos Mendes then left the group, and former Os Deltons musician Fernando Tordo came in for him. In 1967 they took on an engagement in the night club Sete e Meio in Albufeira on the Algarve , and recorded one last EP with new pieces of their own, with orchestrations by Thilo Krassmann .

Since 1968

Paulo de Carvalho and Chaby had left the band in November 1967, and two new musicians were hired to fulfill the commitments they had made in 1968. At the end of 1968 the band split up. Fernando Tordo then became known as a solo artist, for example with his 10th place at the Eurovision de la Chanson in 1973 , as did Carlos Mendes, who appeared twice in what is now the Eurovision Song Contest , and in 1969 recorded a single with the piece Penina , which Paul McCartney recorded in 1968 in the Algarve had written for the Porto-based beat band Jotta Herre (who also released the piece on their own EP in 1969).

On the initiative of Fernando Chaby and Paulo de Carvalho, who was the most successful ex-Sheiks as a solo artist, the group came together again in 1979. They recorded an LP that year with a compilation of newly arranged pieces by them. In 1980 they appeared on television with their own show, in which they played alone and with invited guest musicians, but also performed skits with actors and gave interviews. They recorded another LP with new songs in Portuguese throughout. Then the group's activity ended again.

Later they occasionally appeared in various formations, but always with original members, for example on special occasions such as their TV show as Só nós trés (German: Just the three of us, meaning Tordo, Carvalho and Mendes) for the RTP on New Year's Eve 1989 in the casino Estoril . The formation was re-released even further from its original sound at the 2011 TV gala moderated by Catarina Furtado .

In 2005 the Sheiks performed again in front of a larger audience, as part of the IberRock Festival in Viseu . From the end of 2007, the group began a series of highly regarded guest performances all over the country with the original cast, in which they reviewed their success times in the 1960s with a mixture of self-irony and joy in the original music.

In January 2013 the group got together again to tell the story of the band at concerts in an intimate atmosphere in the winter garden of the Teatro São Luiz, including speeches and anecdotes.
