Behice Sadık Boran (born May 1, 1910 in Bursa , † October 7, 1987 in Brussels ) was a Turkish sociologist and politician.

biography

Boran attended Robert College in Istanbul , where she became the first female student. She then worked as a teacher in Manisa and finally went to the United States on a scholarship, where she studied sociology at the University of Michigan . In 1939 she completed her studies with a doctorate and returned to Turkey.

Boran became a lecturer in sociology at Ankara University . She also wrote articles for the daily Tan and founded the Adımlar magazine with some friends , which was banned in 1944. In 1946 she married Nevzat Hatko, two years later she lost her position as a lecturer because of her political views. At the end of the 1940s she gave birth to a daughter who died a few days later.

In 1950, Behice Boran was sentenced to 15 months in prison for protesting Turkey's participation in the Korean War . While in custody, she gave birth to her son Dursun.

In 1961 she was co-founder of the Turkish Workers' Party (TİP), for which she was elected to parliament for the province of Şanlıurfa in the 1965 general election. In 1970 she became party leader.

After the 1971 coup , the party was banned and Behice Boran was sentenced to 15 years in prison. In 1974, however, she was granted an amnesty and re-established the Labor Party under the old name. After the coup in 1980 she had to leave Turkey again and went into exile in Sofia, Düsseldorf and Brussels. After she did not comply with an invitation to return, her Turkish citizenship was revoked due to a decree of the military junta. In 1987 she announced the unification of the illegally existing TİP with the Communist Party of Turkey. A short time later she died in Brussels at the age of 77.

As part of the TİP, she campaigned for a lawful path to socialism and refused to represent Kurdish special interests.

As one of the first Turkish politicians and sociologists, her example influenced other Turkish women. The Association of Turkish Social Scientists named a prize after her, which has been awarded since 2011.
