Rádio Renascença (RR) [ ˈʁadiu ʁɯnɐʃˈsẽsɐ ] ( German Radio Wiedergeburt ) is a private radio broadcaster from Portugal . Renascença is owned by the Catholic Church of Portugal . The station's programming is mainly based on information broadcasts, but also on music with an emphasis on the 1960s and 1970s. The station represents the conservative political direction in Portugal. In terms of music, however, it always offered space for innovative or daring DJs, especially in the evening and night programs. The well-known radio presenter António Sérgio started at Rádio Renascença in 1968, where he became a pioneer of the rock , punk and metal scene in Portugal with his program Rotação (German: Rotation) from 1976 . And already in 1963 the sheiks had drawn their inspiration from the evening music show 23a hora (German: 23rd hour) before they became the most important beat band in the country.

history

The Portuguese Catholic Church founded Rádio Renascença in 1934 in order to better reach the Catholic faithful and to broadcast services for the first time. In June 1936 Renascença went on air for the first time, initially broadcast from a simple transmitter mast in the Lisbon area . One month later, the radio station was able to move into the newly furnished studio on Rua Capello, which is still in use today.

Rádio Renascença also had a greater significance during the Carnation Revolution of 1974, since at 12:21 a.m. on April 25th the first stanza of the song Grândola, Vila Morena (Grândola, tanned city) , which was banned by the dictatorship, was read about him by the night presenter, the had immediately expressed solidarity with the soldiers who had taken the station a few minutes earlier. Then the song was heard, sung by the anti-fascist protest singer Zeca Afonso . It was a signal for the Portuguese population - although it was not yet possible to determine why. For the various units of the rebelling military, the Movimento das Forças Armadas (German: Movement of the Armed Forces), however, it was the agreed message that all starting positions could be taken as planned and the coup was now to be tackled. Rádio Renascença thus transmitted the signal of the point of no return for the revolution that ended the authoritarian Estado Novo regime after more than 40 years.

After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the radio station was initially nationalized as part of the new economic and regulatory policy, but shortly afterwards it returned to the leadership of the Catholic Church. In 1986, Rádio Renascença began broadcasting a second channel called RFM , which was intended to appeal to a younger audience and to this day mainly plays songs from the 1980s. In 1997, the station opened another channel called MEGA FM , which, like RFM, primarily plays music, but is primarily focused on the current charts. Some specially tailored local programs are also transmitted via Renascença and RFM , and there are editorial offices in Évora , Braga , Lisbon, Chaves , Porto , Viseu , Leiria and Elvas .

The strongest transmitter of Rádio Renascença is located near Muge , Salvaterra de Magos county , at 39.119939N 8.711472W, which transmits on 594 kHz with 100 kW transmission power. A 259-meter-high, self-radiating transmission mast, which is the tallest structure in Portugal, is used as the antenna.
