Antonio Sérgio

António Sérgio Correia Ferrão (born January 14, 1950 in Benguela , Angola , † October 31, 2009 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was a Portuguese radio presenter and music journalist. He is considered to be one of the most important promoters of rock music and alternative music styles in Portugal and is comparable in importance there to the John Peels in the United Kingdom .

Life

António Sérgio started as a temporary worker at Rádio Comercial in 1967 before joining Rádio Renascença as a presenter in 1968 . He became known from 1976 with his local program Rotação (Eng .: Rotation), in which he mainly introduced new punk and metal bands, played new releases early, and continuously provided the growing number of people interested in alternative music with information that was not otherwise were easy to obtain. In doing so, he influenced the listening habits of a broad class of young people, whose sense of time he met. Motivated by the sparse opportunities for corresponding record releases in Portugal, he founded the record label of the same name on which u. a. 1981 the first single of Xutos & Pontapés appeared. He also produced groups himself, in addition to the first releases of the Xutos & Pontapés, the only LP of the Faíscas successor band Corpo Diplomático (1979).

From 1982 to 1993 he entertained one of the most influential radio programs in the history of Portuguese rock music with Som da Frente (English: Sounds of the Front Front), broadcast by Rádio Comercial (RC). The Lista rebelde set up in the show , which acted as a counter-chart to the official sales hit parades, also contributed to the show's popularity. At the same time, Sérgio presented Lança-Chamas (German: Flamethrower ) from 1983 to 1993, the most important radio show for heavy metal in Portugal. In 1993 he became the most important presenter of the newly created music and youth channel XFM . Sérgio devoted himself in further programs z. T. also other styles of music, u. a. the jazz and innovative dance music, for example in A Hora do Lobo (German: The Hour of the Wolf, since 1997 on RC), where he also paid attention to world music and invited bands in the direction to live performances.

He was considered inappropriate and was often sought after as an independent and competent advisor. He was part of the jury for the selection of the 50 most important music albums in Portugal, organized by the music magazine BLITZ for its 25th anniversary. He was awarded the Radio Prize at the Globos de Ouro 2000 awards. He met the occasional comparisons of his work with that of John Peel or Anthony Wilson with the recognition of their work and his personal encounter with Peel, whose diverse and impartial interest in authentic music he emphasized without entering into comparisons.

On the night of October 31st to November 1st, 2009, António Sérgio suddenly died of a heart attack at the age of 59 .
