Svensson played in his youth at Rydöbruks IF . In 1990 the goalkeeper moved to Halmstads BK in the Allsvenskan . He guarded the gate there until 2002 and was able to celebrate two championship titles and once winning the Svenska Cup .

Svensson was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the league and made his debut for the Swedish national team on January 29, 1998 , when the selection ended in a 0-0 draw with Jamaica . At the next international match on March 25, he conceded four goals when they lost 4-0 in the debut of the new national coach Tommy Söderberg Spain . In 2001 he was able to play his way back into the national team's goal, but his use in the 0-0 draw on January 31 against the Faroese team was his last game for the Swedish national team.

In 2003 Svensson left Halmstads BK and switched to AIK Solna . There he was a regular for two years, but in 2005 he moved on to Enosis Neon Paralimni in Cyprus. After only half a year he returned to Sweden and joined IF Elfsborg , where he replaced the injured Johan Wiland .

Originally he wanted to end his career at the end of the season, but the two goalkeepers were injured at league rivals BK Häcken and Svensson was signed on at short notice and played in two league games. In the summer he moved to Malmö FF , where Mattias Asper had left the club, and became a substitute behind Jonas Sandqvist .
