history

The Faroe Islands have never been able to qualify for a European or World Cup. Nevertheless, from their point of view, remarkable successes have been achieved at European level.

Qualifying round for EM 1992

On September 12, 1990, the national team of the Faroe Islands caused a sensation when they defeated Austria's team 1-0 on neutral ground in Landskrona ( Sweden ) for the European Championship qualification . This day went down in Faroese history . Austria finally won the second leg 3-0.

In the same qualifying round, the Faroe Islands lost on October 10, 1990 and September 25, 1991 against the selection from Denmark (1: 4 and 0: 4).

A respectable 1-1 draw against Northern Ireland followed on May 1, 1991, but it was able to return the favor with 5-0 in the second leg in the Faroe Islands. The 1-1 draw against the Turkish national soccer team on July 15, 1991 was more than just a respectable success. It was also the first of nine goals by temporary record goal scorer Todi Jónsson .

World Cup qualifying rounds for 1994 to 2002

Participation in the 1994 World Cup qualification was unsuccessful. The Faroe Islands lost all ten games. The only goal they could achieve on April 25, 1993 away against Cyprus (1: 3). The goal difference was 1:38 at the end.

The qualifying games for the European Championship in 1996 went a little better. You could defeat San Marino 3-0 at home, 3-1 away and finished next to last in the final table.

For the 1998 World Cup qualification they were able to relegate Malta to last place in the group. In 1997 they won both games against the Mediterranean islanders 2-1.

In the run-up to the 2002 World Cup, they achieved the same qualification with Luxembourg (2-0 and 1-0) in 2001 , and the Faroe Islands won 2-2 at home in Toftir on September 3, 2000 against eventual World Cup participants Slovenia .

A friendly match against Liechtenstein in the then brand-new Tórsvøllur stadium in the island's capital Tórshavn on August 21, 2002 ended 3-1 for the hosts.

Qualifying round for EM 2004

In qualifying for the 2004 European Championship , the Faroe Islands could only achieve one point: They played 2-2 against Scotland's selection on September 7, 2002 after they had already led 2-0 after twelve minutes. As a consequence, the pressure increased on the then national coach of Scotland, Berti Vogts .

In the same qualifying round, the Faroe Islands played against the German national football team for the first time , but lost 2-1 on October 16, 2002 in Hanover and 2-0 on June 11, 2003 in the second leg in Tórshavn after 89 goalless minutes.

The German team boss Rudi Völler after the victory in Tórshavn in front of 6000 spectators:

“I've always believed in victory. Unfortunately, we made it really exciting. We played a bit slow in the first half, but we tried everything in the second half. I can't blame the team. You can't shine against such an opponent, you can only use a crowbar. "
