Sochaux [ soˈʃo ] is a French commune with 3949 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs département ( Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region ). Important cities nearby are Montbéliard and Belfort .
Sochaux is known as the location of the largest automobile factory of the Peugeot brand with around 10,500 employees (as of 2019) , through the second division football club FC Sochaux and the Musée de l'Aventure Peugeot .
geography
Sochaux lies at 317 m to 398 m, between the Jura Mountains and the Vosges Mountains , in the so-called Burgundian Gate , a wide valley between the towns of Montbéliard and Belfort. The municipal area, which is only 2.17 km² in size, is almost exclusively built over today, with the Peugeot factory in particular taking up an important part of the municipality.
Attractions
From 1876 to 1877 a Lutheran church was built by Jean Frédéric Fallot . After the law separating religion and state from 1905 came into force , this church building was transferred to the state, which now used it as a school. In 1906 the Lutheran congregation therefore built a new church, again according to Fallot's plans. It was expanded on one side in 1939, the planned symmetrical expansion on the other side never came about.
population
With 3949 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Sochaux is one of the largest municipalities in the Doubs department. In 1962 there were still 7557 inhabitants, since then the population has fallen sharply due to emigration. Since 1990, however, there has been slight growth again. The inhabitants of Sochaux are called Sochalia in French .
Sochaux is a suburb of the city of Montbéliard , whose agglomeration has 117,510 inhabitants. Around 250,000 people live in the expanded metropolitan area ( Belfort and Montbéliard).

The Stade Auguste-Bonal (formerly: Stade de la Forge ) was built in 1931 in the immediate vicinity of the factory; it holds 20,000 spectators today.
In 1935 and 1938, FC Sochaux became French champions .
