Lanthenans Meetinghouse

Lanthenans is a French commune with a population of 68 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Lanthenans is located at 460  m , about 18 kilometers southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends on a small high plateau south of the Doubstal and north of the Lomont range , in the extreme northern mountain ranges of the Jura .

The area of the 3.36 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Lanthenans, which is on average 460 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land and is topographically located in the catchment area of the Ruisseau des Combes , but does not show any surface running water because the rainwater seeps into the karst subsoil. In the north and east, the plateau is separated from the Hyémondans basin by a hill. To the south, the parish extends into the hills of Bermont at the northern foot of the Lomont range. At 592 m, the highest point in Lanthenans is reached here.

Neighboring municipalities of Lanthenans are Sourans in the north, Hyémondans in the east, Anteuil in the south and Blussans in the west.

history

The canons of Saint-Paul Abbey of Besançon founded the Augustinian Priory of Lanthenans in the 11th century. The monks cleared various spots at the northern foot of the Lomont range, made the land arable and thus ensured settlement. Together with Franche-Comté , Lanthenans came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Lanthenans is part of the Communauté de communes des Isles du Doubs .

With 68 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Lanthenans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (116 people were counted in 1896), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Lanthenans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Blussans to Tournedoz. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Anteuil and Hyémondans.
