Cour-Saint-Maurice is a French municipality with 156 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Cour-Saint-Maurice is located at 520  m , seven kilometers west of Maîche and about 29 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The double community extends in the Jura , on a terrace on the northern slope of the Dessoubre , between the heights of Montaigu in the north and the plateau of Maîche in the south.

The area of the 4.47 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The southern border runs along the Dessoubre, which flows in a winding course deeply cut into the surrounding Jura high plateaus from southwest to northeast. The steep slopes of the valley are dominated by striking limestone cliffs in various places. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over a 100 m high steep slope onto the wide terrace of Cour and Saint-Maurice. This terrain terrace is overlooked by a steep, predominantly wooded slope with an average height of 150 m, which leads to the height of Les Plains. At 696 m, the highest elevation of Cour-Saint-Maurice is reached here. This height is subdivided into various, partly rocky protrusions by the erosion effect of the Dessoubre and its side streams. In the northeast, the municipality extends to the Mongens promontory above Vauclusotte.

The municipality consists of different districts and hamlets, namely:

  • Cour ( 520  m ) in a hollow on the northern slope of the Dessoubre valley
  • Saint-Maurice ( 520  m ) on the terrace on the northern slope of the Dessoubre valley
  • Le Pont-Neuf ( 410  m ) on the Dessoubre
  • Le Moulin-du-Bas ( 421  m ) on Dessoubre
  • Le Moulin-du-Dessus ( 425  m ) at the mouth of the Vaucluse stream in the Dessoubre

Neighboring municipalities of Cour-Saint-Maurice are Belleherbe in the north, Vauclusotte and Orgeans-Blanchefontaine in the east, Battenans-Varin in the south and Vaucluse in the west.

history

The parish of Saint-Maurice is one of the oldest in the region. It was founded in the 6th century by monks from the Saint-Maurice monastery in the Swiss canton of Valais. In the Middle Ages, part of what is now the municipality belonged to the lordship of Châtillon-sous-Maîche. The other part was ruled by the von Saint-Maurice family, who owned a castle in Cour. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. During the French Revolution , the castle was demolished. From around 1790 Cour and Saint-Maurice formed a double parish.

Attractions

The Saint-Maurice church, originally from the 12th century, was largely rebuilt in the 18th century (today Saint-Ursin church). Various farmhouses in the traditional Franche-Comté style from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center. The cemetery chapel is designated as a monument historique .

With 156 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Cour-Saint-Maurice is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (282 people were still counted in 1906), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Cour-Saint-Maurice was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, arable and fruit growing). The water power of the Dessoubre was used early on to operate mills and sawmills. Today there are a few local small businesses, including a sawmill, a furniture factory and several hotels and restaurants. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The commune is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Maîche to Sancey-le-Grand . Other road connections exist with Vaucluse, Battenans-Varin and Rosureux. By the municipality leading railway Dole Belfort , the station Saint-Maurice is however no longer served.
