Villars-sous-Dampjoux is a French municipality with 356 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Villars-sous-Dampjoux is located at 357 m , four kilometers south of Pont-de-Roide-Vermondans and about 18 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a valley widening of the Doubs at the mouth of the Barbèche, at the upper entrance into the gorge-like breakthrough of the Doubs through the Lomont chain .
The area of the 3.06 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The area is bounded in the east by the Doubs and in the south by its left tributary Barbèche , which flows parallel to the Lomont chain. The Doubs has formed a deep valley here with a flat valley floor that is a maximum of 1 km wide. To the north of the village it breaks through the Lomont chain, which from a geological and tectonic point of view represents an anticline of the Jura folds . The steep valley slopes are criss-crossed by striking rocky outcrops. From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over the valley and the adjacent slope up to the level of the Montagne du Lomont. The highest point in Villars-sous-Dampjoux is reached here at 723 m.
Neuchâtel-Urtière and Pont-de-Roide-Vermondans in the north, Noirefontaine in the east, Dampjoux in the south and Feule in the west are neighboring municipalities of Villars-sous-Dampjoux .
history
The municipality of Villars-sous-Dampjoux was settled very early. In the Grotte de Rochedane, remains of tools and teeth have been discovered during archaeological excavations. From the 13th to the 15th century, Villars-sous-Dampjoux was under the sovereignty of the Neuchâtel family . Since around 1500 the village has belonged to the dominion of Clémont under the sovereignty of the Principality of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) , shared its fate and in 1748 came under French administration. With the opening of the railway line from Montbéliard to Saint-Hippolyte in 1886, Villars-sous-Dampjoux was connected to the railway network. Passenger traffic on the line was shut down in 1938, goods traffic resumed after the Second World War, but finally ceased in 1969. The village does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Dampjoux.
