Vandoncourt is a French municipality with 830 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vandoncourt is 418  m above sea level, about nine kilometers east-southeast of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends southeast of the basin of Montbéliard, in a wide hollow that opens to the west to the valley of the Gland , in the northern foothills of the Jura at the foot of the Abbévillers plateau.

The area of the 8.57 km² municipality covers a section of the northern French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the broad Vandoncourt basin, which gradually descends to the west to the valley of the Gland (tributary of the Doubs ). It is separated from the valley of Dasle to the north by a hill. The valley basin consists mainly of arable and meadow land. To the southeast, the terrain rises relatively gently but continuously to the Abbévillers high plateau, which belongs to the Table Jura . At 611 m, the highest point in Vandoncourt is reached at the height of Les Hautes Bornes . The forest slope of Forêt Hollard is divided by several valley cuts, including the Combe Peugeot .

Neighboring communities of Vandoncourt are Dasle in the north, Montbouton and Croix in the east, Abbévillers and Hérimoncourt in the south and Seloncourt in the west.

history

The first written mention of Vandoncourt took place in 1188. Since the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Blamont rule, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard. The monastery Belchamp held ecclesiastical sovereignty . In 1282 the Blamont de Montbéliard lordship passed into the possession of the lords of Neuchâtel . After Vandoncourt came back under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in 1506, the Reformation was introduced in 1541 . As part of the Blamont dominion, which formed one of the four dominions of the Principality of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) and was annexed by France in 1699, Vandoncourt finally came under contract to France in 1748. In the relevant treaty, France had given the previous sovereign, the Duke of Württemberg, a. a. the status quo of the Lutheran Church assured.

Attractions

The Lutheran Trinity Church ( Temple de la très Sainte Trinité or Église luthérienne ) was rebuilt in 1769 with the support of Duke Karl Eugen . Today, in addition to the home owners, the Lutherans, the Catholics also use the church. One of the natural attractions of the region is the natural bridge called Pont Sarrazin (made of limestone) in a valley cut in the Forêt Hollard.

With 830 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Vandoncourt is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased at the beginning of the 20th century (723 people were still counted in 1901), a period of stagnation followed for a long time, before a slight population growth began again from around 1960.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vandoncourt was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Seloncourt to Beaucourt . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around nine kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Hérimoncourt and Dasle.
