Mairie Meslières

Meslières is a French municipality with 361 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Meslières is located at 385  m , about 13 kilometers southeast of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern foothills of the Jura , in the valley of the Gland , which is cut into the plateau of the table Jura , near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the 2.99 km² municipality covers a section of the northern French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the valley cut of the Gland , the bottom of which has a width of about 300 meters. The gland drains the area north to the Doubs . The valley is flanked on both sides by around 100 m high, wooded steep slopes, some of which are traversed by ledges. The slopes are subdivided by various valley cuts, which, however, do not show any surface running water. The surrounding Tafeljura plateaus are formed by Sequan and Kimmeridge limestone. To the west, the municipality extends to the heights of Planchamps and Drammont (up to 505 m). In the east, the area comprises the southern part of the Abbévillers plateau, which is an average of 560 m and consists mainly of arable and meadow land. At 577 m, the highest point in Meslières is reached on the slope of Sur le Seux .

In addition to the actual village, Meslières also includes several hamlets and individual farms, namely:

  • Les Fourneaux ( 544  m ) on the edge of the high plateau east of the Gland valley cut
  • Rombois ( 558  m ) on the Abbévillers plateau

Neighboring communities of Meslières are Hérimoncourt in the north, Abbévillers in the east, Glay in the south and Roches-lès-Blamont in the west.

history

Meslières was first mentioned in a document in 1180 under the name Mierlires . Over time, the spelling changed via Meglieres (1282), Mellieres (14th century), Meiglières (15th century), Melieres (16th century), Meilleres (1542) and Meliere (1765) to the current name.

Since the Middle Ages, Meslières belonged to the Blamont dominion, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard. In 1282 the Blamont de Montbéliard lordship passed into the possession of the lords of Neuchâtel . After the village came back under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in 1506, the Reformation was introduced in 1541 . Commercial activity began in 1671 with the construction of a paper mill. A blast furnace was added in 1683, but it was closed again in 1698. As part of the Blamont rule, which formed one of the four dominions of the Principality of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) and was annexed by France in 1699, Meslières finally came under contract to France in 1748. Today the village is part of the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération municipal association .

Attractions

The village chapel was built in the 19th century. The Lutheran Church (Église luthérienne) was established from 1860 to 1862 through the renovation of the upper hall in the Mairie, built in 1857, led by the architect Woetzel.

With 361 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Meslières is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. In 1901 Meslières reached its peak with 648 inhabitants. After that, there was a rapid population decline. Since 1936 the population has always been in the range between 340 and 440 people.

Economy and Infrastructure

As early as the middle of the 19th century, Meslières developed into an industrial community, with the manufacture of tools and the production of gears and gear wheels being important. Today, one company each for décolletage and precision mechanics is based in Meslières. There are also other local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Hérimoncourt to Blamont . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 13 kilometers away. There are other road connections with Abbévillers and Roches-lès-Blamont.
