Maire Hérimoncourt

Hérimoncourt is a French commune with 3,632 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the canton of Audincourt in the arrondissement of Montbéliard .

geography

Hérimoncourt is located at 365  m , about ten kilometers southeast of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The community, a former street village , extends in the northern foothills of the Jura , in the valley of the Gland , which is cut into the plateau of the Table Jura . The place is located near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the 7.29 km² large municipality covers a section of the northern French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Gland valley, which is about 500 meters wide. The gland drains the area north to the Doubs . The valley is flanked on both sides by around 100 m high steep slopes, which are also criss-crossed by rocks, especially in the southern part. The slopes and plateaus are subdivided by various valley cuts, which, however, usually do not show any surface flowing water. To the west, the municipal soil extends to the Tafeljura plateau of Mouterot ( 502  m ) and Thulay (up to 500 m). To the east, the terrain rises to the Abbévillers plateau with the Bois de la Bouloye (up to 575 m) and Forêt Hollard forest areas . In the Pré au Sire clearing in Forêt Hollard, the highest point in Hérimoncourt is reached at 578 m.

The districts of Hérimoncourt include:

  • Terre-Blanche ( 355  m ) in the Gland valley north of the town center
  • La Chapotte ( 376  m ) in the valley of the Gland south of the town center

Neighboring municipalities of Hérimoncourt are Seloncourt and Vandoncourt in the north, Abbévillers in the east, Meslières and Roches-lès-Blamont in the south and Thulay in the west.

history

The municipality of Hérimoncourt was populated very early. On the heights of Vieilles Vignes and Mouterot, various tools (flint stones, other cutting devices and an ax from the Neolithic ) and several tumuli were discovered. Two menhirs were found near La Bouloye in 1856 . Further evidence comes from the Burgundy and Merovingian times.

Hérimoncourt is first mentioned in 1188 under the name Arynmoneourt . In the course of time the spelling changed via Erimoncort (1189), Irmencuort (1241), Herimoncort (1339) and Erimoncour (1699) to the current name. Since it was first mentioned, Hérimoncourt belonged to the Blamont domain, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard. The monastery Belchamp held the ecclesiastical highness . In 1282 the Blamont de Montbéliard lordship passed into the possession of the lords of Neuchâtel . There is evidence of a local noble family from the 14th century. After Hérimoncourt came back under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard in 1506, the Reformation was introduced in 1541 and the local church became Lutheran.

Hérimoncourt suffered badly from the invasion of the Guisen (1587/88) and during the Thirty Years' War (especially from 1633 to 1642). As part of the Blamont dominion, which formed one of the four dominions of the Principality of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) and was annexed by France in 1699, Hérimoncourt finally came to France in 1748 by contract.

Lutheran Church
Church of St. Peter and Paul

There is a Lutheran and a Catholic church in the village. The Lutheran church was completed in 1824 and replaced the previous building from the pre-Reformation period. The Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul was built in several stages from 1882 to 1925. The Château Pierre-Peugeot, built at the beginning of the 20th century, whose style is reminiscent of an English manor house, stands in an elevated position. The 19th century settlement of La Bastille represents a typical workers' settlement of that time. The painter's works are shown in the Musée Roger Comte.

With 3,632 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Hérimoncourt is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Doubs department. From 1850 to 1900 the population showed rapid growth in the course of industrialization. With almost 3800 people, the population reached its preliminary high around 1900. This was followed by a period of stagnation and after 1930 a decline of 14%. Particularly in the period from 1975 to 1990 there was significant growth (23%). With almost 4,000 inhabitants, the previous high was reached at the beginning of the 1990s. Since then, the population has decreased slightly again. The settlement area of Hérimoncourt has grown together almost seamlessly with that of Seloncourt.

Economy and Infrastructure

At the beginning of the 19th century, Hérimoncourt developed into an industrial location. The industrial and commercial areas are concentrated in the Gland valley near Terre-Blanche and La Chapotte.

Hérimoncourt is considered the cradle of the Peugeot family . The first workshops in the fields of metal processing and textiles were founded here in the middle of the 18th century. A factory of the Peugeot group, which had specialized in the production of electrically operated handicraft tools, had to close its operations in 2001. Faurecia , a branch of the Peugeot Group that produces filters and exhaust systems, is one of the municipality's main employers today . There are also various smaller companies in the mechanical, wood processing and electrical industries. There are also various companies that are active in the service sector as well as numerous retail shops for everyday needs. Hérimoncourt is home to a college and three medical and educational institutes.

With the opening of the tram from Montbéliard to Hérimoncourt in 1887, the municipality was connected to the public transport network, but the line was closed again in 1932. Today Hérimoncourt is part of the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération municipal association .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D34 road from Audincourt to Porrentruy . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Vandoncourt, Glay and Thulay. Hérimoncourt is connected to Audincourt and the city of Montbéliard by a bus line.
