Mairie Seloncourt

Seloncourt is a French commune with 5,775 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Seloncourt is at 340  m , about seven kilometers southeast of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The municipality, a former street village, extends south of the basin of Montbéliard, in the valley low of the Gland just before its confluence with the Doubs , in the northern foothills of the Jura .

The area of the 7.92 km² large municipality covers a section of the northern French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the valley low of the Gland , which opens to the northwest to the valley plain of the Doubs. The approximately 500 m wide valley is flanked by plateaus, which are partly covered with arable land and meadow, partly with forest. They are subdivided by various dry valleys , including the Combe Guenot and the Combe Peugeot in the east and the Bondeval valley in the south. To the north the municipal area extends to the Vraimont ( 415  m ), to the south into the forest area of Essart Bourguignon , in which the highest elevation of Seloncourt is reached at 483 m, and to the south-east to the edge of the Forêt Hollard (up to 430 m) . These heights form the northern roof of the Tafeljura plateaus .

The districts belong to Seloncourt:

  • Berne ( 348  m ) in the Gland valley south-east of the town center
  • Sur les Roches ( 363  m ) on the plateau between the Doubs and Gland valleys

Neighboring municipalities of Seloncourt are Audincourt and Dasle in the north, Vandoncourt in the east, Hérimoncourt , Thulay and Bondeval in the south and Valentigney in the west.

history

Seloncourt was first mentioned in writing in 1170 in a deed of donation to the Belchamp monastery . Seloncourt formed a fiefdom under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard. In 1282 it was detached from the county and came under the Blamont rule. With this, the village came back under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 16th century. These introduced the Reformation and from 1558 a Lutheran pastor worked at the village church (now called Vieille église , i.e. old church).

As part of the Blamont dominion, which formed one of the four dominions of the Principality of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) and was annexed by France in 1699, Seloncourt finally came under contract to France in 1748. The French government took the death of the Lutheran pastor in 1705 as an opportunity to appoint a Catholic curate at the village church, pastor for the approximately twelve Catholics in the village. The 200 Lutherans in the village had no choice but to contact the Lutheran churches in Audincourt or Valentigney.

In the middle of the 19th century Seloncourt experienced a significant economic boom through the introduction of the watch industry, whose products included wristwatches, alarm clocks and pendulum clocks. With the opening of the tram from Montbéliard to Hérimoncourt in 1887, the municipality was connected to the public transport network, but the line was closed again in 1932. Today Seloncourt is part of the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération municipal association .

  • Seloncourt's old Lutheran village church (Vieille église) and the new Lutheran church are very close to one another. The old village church (in the characteristic style of the Franche-Comté church buildings) originally dates back to the 15th century, was partially rebuilt in the 18th century and was last restored from 1985 to 1992. Until the Reformation in 1558 it was dedicated to St. Lorenz and was surrounded by a cemetery until the 19th century .
  • The new Lutheran church (Temple luthérien, also Grand Temple) was built from 1906 to 1907 from granite from the Vosges. Its organ was built in 1924 according to plans by Albert Schweitzer .
  • There are two other churches, the Saint-Laurent Catholic Church and the Baptist Church (Temple baptiste).
  • There are various manufacturers' villas and mansions from the Wilhelminian era in the village.
  • The Château Jean-Pierre Peugeot , built by Victor Boname at the end of the 19th century , now houses the Center de Formation of the Sochaux- Montbéliard football club .

With 5775 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Seloncourt is one of the larger municipalities in the Doubs department. From 1850 to 1911 the population showed a continuous growth. This was followed by a period of stagnation that lasted until the late 1950s. The 1960s were again marked by growth. In contrast to the other municipalities in the Montbéliard agglomeration, the economic crisis and the restructuring of industry in the Pays de Montbéliard between 1975 and 1990 did not result in a decline, but only in a stagnation of the population. As the only larger municipality in the agglomeration, Seloncourt has shown slight growth in recent years. The settlement area of Seloncourt has grown together almost completely today with those of Audincourt and Hérimoncourt.

Economy and Infrastructure

Seloncourt, which was dominated by agriculture for a long time, developed into an industrial location around the middle of the 19th century. The industrial and commercial areas are concentrated in the Gland valley near Berne and on the border with Audincourt. Today the most important industrial sectors include the manufacture of leather goods, surface treatment, décolletage, precision mechanics and the electrical industry. There are also various companies that are active in the service sector as well as numerous retail shops for everyday needs. Seloncourt has a college, a vocational school and a medical-pedagogical institute.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D34 road from Audincourt to Porrentruy . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around six kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Valentigney, Bondeval, Dasle and Vandoncourt. Seloncourt is connected to Audincourt and the city of Montbéliard by a bus line.
