Mairie Vaucluse

Vaucluse is a French municipality with 120 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vaucluse is 500  m , eight kilometers west of Maîche and about 29 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , isolated in a basin of the Ruisseau de Vaucluse, which only opens to the east to the valley of the Dessoubre , below the plateau of Belleherbe.

The area of the 5.01 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Vaucluse basin, which has a diameter of about 1 to 1.5 kilometers at the top. In the south, west and north this basin is flanked by almost 200 m high steep slopes, which are crowned at the upper edge in various places by the rocks of a resistant limestone layer. The municipal boundary mostly runs along this upper edge. At 704 m, the highest point in Vaucluse is reached on the Belleherbe plateau.

The Vaucluse basin is drained by the Ruisseau de Vaucluse, which deepens into the terrain below the village like a gorge before flowing into the Dessoubre. The community area extends to the south along the Dessoubre, which always forms the eastern border. It comprises the western slope of the valley with the Frémondans terrace.

The hamlet of Frémondans ( 570  m ) on a terrace on the left slope of the Dessoubre valley belongs to Vaucluse . Neighboring communities of Vaucluse are Belleherbe in the north, Cour-Saint-Maurice and Battenans-Varin in the east, Rosureux in the south and Charmoille in the west.

history

The municipality of Vaucluse was settled very early, which has been confirmed by archaeological finds (bones, flint stones) from the Paleolithic in the cave of Vaucluse.

In the early 6th century monks from the monastery of Saint-Maurice in the Swiss canton of Valais founded a Benedictine priory in the Vaucluse basin. The monks who settled here saw to the clearing and reclamation of the area. Over time, the village of Vaucluse emerged next to the monastery. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 120 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Vaucluse is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (307 people were counted in 1911), population growth has been recorded again in recent years.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vaucluse was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, arable and fruit growing). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The community is located away from the major thoroughfares. The main access is from Cour-Saint-Maurice on the departmental road D464, which leads from Maîche to Sancey-le-Grand . Further road connections exist with Charmoille and Rosureux.
