history

The municipality of Colombier-Fontaine was settled very early. Remains from the Neolithic to Roman times have been found.

The first written mention of Colombier was in 1147 in a deed of the Archbishop of Besançon, in which the Lanthenans Priory was given the possession of the church in Columbeyr Superiori . The names Colombie Saveroux (1284), Colombier Savoreux (15th century), Colombier-Savoureux (1494), Colobie Savereux (1544) and Colombier-Fontaine have been handed down from later times .

In the Middle Ages, Colombier belonged to the Châtelot dominion, which in 1561 came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard through purchase. In the winter of 1587/88 the village was devastated during the invasion of the Guisen . During the Thirty Years War between 1633 and 1637, it was again affected. With the Versailles Treaty of 1748 Colombier came to France.

The development into an industrial community began in the 19th century. The opening of the railway line from Montbéliard to Besançon in 1858 contributed to the development of the region. The water power of the Doubs was used to operate mills and later for electricity generation. A textile factory, which only ceased operations in 1978, was important. There was also a brickworks, a sawmill and, since the beginning of the 20th century, a foundry founded by the Peugeot family . Today Colombier-Fontaine is a member of the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération municipal association .

Attractions

The Protestant church (Temple) of Colombier-Fontaine was built in the 17th century in the classical style on a slightly elevated position south of the village. At the beginning of the 20th century, the village also received a Catholic church (Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste).

Economy and Infrastructure

Colombier-Fontaine has been shaped by trade and industry since the middle of the 19th century. The most important businesses today include a steel foundry, a chair factory and a sawmill. Today there are also various local small business and retail businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Montbéliard agglomeration.
