The first church was built on the island around the same time. A fortified castle town developed quickly and extended to the northern (right) bank of the Doubs. Due to the lack of space at the foot of the steep slope, it only consisted of a street flanked by two rows of houses. L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs was the center of a castle of the Lords of Neuchâtel.

In 1475 the spot was affected during the Burgundian Wars. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the rule of L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Ortenburg. In 1637, during the Thirty Years' War, the village was again devastated by the French and Swedish troops. Together with Franche-Comté , L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

The water power of the Doubs was used to operate mills very early on. Other water-dependent industries also settled along the river. Over time, L'(southern) Doubsseite the railway line stretched Isle-sur-le-Doubs more and more to the left of, especially after the opening of Besançon to Montbéliard in 1858. Thus, the focus of settlement shifted since the mid-19 Century from the island to the south side of the Doubs in the area of the station. Today, L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs is part of the Deux Vallées Vertes municipal association .

Attractions

The Notre-Dame de la Nativité church still stands in the same place on the island as the first medieval building. However, the current structure dates from 1854, when the church was largely rebuilt. Only the bell tower comes from the previous (fourth) church building from 1784. Only the foundation walls of a tower remain of the medieval castle. On the island there is also a manor house from the 17th century and the Mairie.
