Mairie Branne

Branne is a French municipality with 175 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Branne is located at 280  m , nine kilometers east-northeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 27 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in a wide valley of the Doubs on the right north side of the river, between the breakthrough valleys of Clerval and Hyèvre, at the southern foot of the Montfort.

The area of the 6.45 km² municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The Doubs flows here with several turns through a flat flood plain up to 2 km wide to the west and is accompanied by the waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal . The course of the river always forms the southern border. From here the community area extends northwards over the valley and up a steep slope to the wooded heights of the Bois de Branne ( 525  m ) and the Montfort , on which the highest point of Branne is reached at 556 m. This ridge is part of the extreme northwestern chains of the Jura and forms an anticline in geological and tectonic terms . It falls to the east to the cross valley of the Doubs (Cluse de Clerval), which marks the eastern municipal boundary.

The neighboring municipalities of Branne are Pays de Clerval with Clerval in the north, Chaux-lès-Clerval in the east, Roche-lès-Clerval in the south and Hyèvre-Paroisse in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Branne belonged to the Clerval domain, which came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté, the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Martin church was rebuilt in the 18th century in the classical style, including the bell tower of a previous building from the 15th or 16th century. In the village there is a lavoir (wash house and cattle trough) that dates from 1829.

With 175 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Branne is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (317 people were counted in 1881), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Branne was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N83, which leads from Besançon to Montbéliard . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 15 kilometers away.
