geography

Chaux-lès-Clerval is located at 335  m , about 26 kilometers southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in a wide valley, into which the Doubs enters from the north through the Cluse de Clerval, between the ridges of the Côte d'Armont in the north and the Lomont range in the south, east of the Doubs valley floodplain some 50 m below.

The area of the 8.57 km² municipal area comprised a section of the Doubstal. The main part of the area is occupied by a longitudinal hollow between the two outermost mountain ranges of the Jura , which is around 2 km wide and a total of 8 km long. It increases gradually towards the east. The western border runs along the Doubs. After leaving the breakthrough valley of the Cluse de Clerval, this reaches the longitudinal basin, into which, however, over the course of millions of years it has deepened around 50 m and created an approximately 500 m wide flood plain. The waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal is also located here . In the north, the border is mostly at the southern foot or southern slope of the Côte d'Armont. To the south, the municipality extends over the slowly rising slope of the Bois des Jamots to the wooded ridge of the Lomont chain, on which the highest point of Chaux-lès-Clerval is reached at 650 m. From a geological and tectonic point of view, this ridge forms an anticline of the Jura folds .

Chaux-lès-Clerval also had the hamlets:

  • Ansuans ( 380  m ) on the northern slope of the Lomont range
  • Seneuil ( 415  m ) in a clearing of the Bois des Jamots on the northern slope of the Lomont range

Neighboring communities of Chaux-lès-Clerval were Pays de Clerval with Clerval in the north, Anteuil in the east, Crosey-le-Grand and Crosey-le-Petit in the south and Roche-lès-Clerval and Branne in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Chaux-lès-Clerval was part of the Clerval lordship, which came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. For some time a Cluniac priory existed here. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

Saint-Pierre-et-Paul church

The Saint-Pierre-et-Paul church originally dates back to the construction of a chapel in 1495. In the course of time the church was restored and enlarged several times, for example in the 18th century; the bell tower was built in 1774. The church has remarkable furnishings , including an alabaster statue of the Blessed Virgin (17th century), 18th century steles and a 16th century baptismal font. Remains of a cloister next to the church have been preserved. In the cemetery there is a stone cross from the 16th century. The town center is characterized by numerous restored houses in the traditional Franche-Comté style from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chaux-lès-Clerval was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Clerval to Pont-de-Roide-Vermondans . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Roche-lès-Clerval, Vellevans and via the Col de Ferrière with Vellerot-lès-Belvoir .
