Villars-sous-Écot is a French municipality with 352 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Villars-sous-Écot is located at 355 m , about twelve kilometers southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern French Jura , in a valley widening of the Ruisseau du Bié, south of the Doube valley .
The area of the 11.48 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the valley of the Ruisseau du Bié , which provides drainage to the northwest to the Doubs. The landscape is structured by the numerous short side valleys of the Ruisseau du Bié, all of which are clearly cut into the surrounding, tabular Jura-like plateaus and have steep, mostly wooded slopes. To the south-west, the municipal soil extends to the plateau of Goux-lès-Dambelin. In the east, the Bois de Breuil leads to the high plateau of Écot; and to the southeast, the municipality extends into the headwaters of the Ruisseau du Bié with the heights of the Grands Bois . Here, at 531 m, the highest point in Villars-sous-Écot is reached.
Neighboring communities of Villars-sous-Écot are Colombier-Fontaine and Étouvans in the north, Écot in the east, Goux-lès-Dambelin in the south and Saint-Maurice-Colombier in the west.
history
The village church was first mentioned in a document as early as 1177. In the Middle Ages, Villars-sous-Écot belonged to the lordship of Neuchâtel. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The Saint-Vit church was rebuilt in 1757 in the classical style. There is a former mill at the Ruisseau du Bié.

With 352 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Villars-sous-Écot is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (289 people were still counted in 1886), a marked increase in population was recorded, especially during the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Villars-sous-Écot was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Montbéliard agglomeration. Motocross races are held every year at Villars-sous-Écot.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Maurice-Colombier to Pont-de-Roide-Vermondans . The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about nine kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Écot, Colombier-Fontaine and Goux-lès-Dambelin.
