Portage la Prairie is a place in the Canadian province of Manitoba , located approx. 70 km west of the provincial capital Winnipeg on the meandering bank of the Assiniboine River and is the fourth largest city in the province with 12,700 inhabitants (2006) . Portage is where the Assiniboine is the shortest distance from Lake Manitoba . Before the Canadian Pacific Railway was built in the 1880s , the lake-to-river route formed part of a travel and trade route between Ontario and Quebec in the east and Alberta and British Columbia in the west, providing an alternative to the Grand Rapids route . Since the new railway line also ran via Portage, the importance of the place was retained, while Grand Rapids lost a lot. Today, Portage is mainly characterized by agriculture and the food processing industry. The largest oat mill in the world is in Portage.
