The Pas ( French Le Pas ) is a city in the Canadian province of Manitoba with 5369 inhabitants (2016). It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas .
geography
The Pas is on the Saskatchewan River and about 15 kilometers south of Clearwater Lake . The provincial capital Winnipeg is located at a distance of 520 kilometers in the southeast. The Manitoba Highway 10 runs right through The Pas.
history
The Cree were indigenous to the area . At the end of the 17th century , Henry Kelsey toured the region with some settlers who established themselves there in the fur business . The trade in skins , fishing as well as activities in the timber industry and mining formed the livelihood of the inhabitants for many years. The place was initially called Paskoya and is most likely based on the name of the Cree for 'narrow place' (the river). The city was officially founded in 1912.
The city is now home to parts of the University College of the North (UCN), the OCN Blizzards ice hockey team and the Sam Waller Museum .
Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival
The Pas has held the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival every February since 1948 . Here, various competitions are held, such as muskrats -Fellenthäutung ( muskrat skinning ), ice fishing , chainsaw competitions and Bannockbrotbacken . The highlight is a three-day dog sled race over a total of 105 miles.
