history
The native inhabitants of the area were the Cree and the Assiniboine , but they were not sedentary and primarily followed the migratory bison herds as hunters . Only a few settler families initially settled in the region. Only after several, initially unsuccessful efforts, a Canadian Pacific Railway finally led to Neepawa, did the town flourish and the city was officially founded in 1883. The name Neepawa goes back to the Cree and means 'land of diversity' ( land of plenty ). The trade in agricultural products as well as game products and furs was the main livelihood of the inhabitants.
The town is home to the Neepawa Natives ice hockey team, as well as the Margaret Laurence House and the Beautiful Plains Museum .
Built in 1884, the Neepawa Court House , a two-story, brick-built courthouse was added to the Manitoba National Historic Sites of Canada list in 1981.
