Eva Clare
Eva Clare (* 1884 in Neepawa / Manitoba ; † March 29, 1961 in Winnipeg ) was a Canadian pianist and music teacher.
Life
After an initial training in Winnipeg, Clare studied for five years with Olga Varet-Stepanoff and Josef Lhévinne in Berlin. During the First World War she continued her training in New York with Ernest Hutcheson and Howard Brockway . She initially taught in Regina / Saskatchewan, where she founded the Eva Clare Studio Club in 1915 , through which she published the book Musical Appreciation and the Studio Club in 1924 .
In 1918 Clare moved to Winnipeg, where she performed Grieg's piano concerto with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1922 . A successful concert tour took her to Prague, Munich, Vienna and Budapest from 1927-28. She was the first president of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers' Association (MRMTA) and, with Leonard Heaton and Gladys Egbert , compiled the first book of works for the Western Board of Music's piano exam . In 1933 she founded a studio club for her friends and students in Manitoba, which later became the Wednesday Morning Musicales .
From 1937 until her retirement in 1949 she was director of the music faculty at the University of Manitoba , whose concert hall was named after her. Her students include a. Beth Cooil , Phyllis Holtby , Anna Moncrieff , Barbara Pentland , Helga and Snjolaug Sigurdson , Frank Thorolfson and Moira Wilson .
