Leonard Heaton (pianist)

Leonard Dunstan Heaton (* 1889 in Hinckley , Leicestershire , † August 15, 1963 in Winnipeg ) was a Canadian pianist and music teacher of English origin.

Heaton was a student of Leopold Godowsky and Rudolph Ganz . Either before 1909 in Berlin or after 1914 in New York he studied with Alberto Jonas . In 1909 he settled in Winnipeg, where he worked as a piano teacher, pianist and organist for more than 50 years. From 1923 to 1925 he was President of the Men's Musical Club of Winnipeg , from 1944 to 1948 President of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers' Association (MRMTA). His students included Jean Broadfoot , John Kuchmy , Edward Lincoln , Helen Martens , Gordon McLean , Ross Pratt , Joyce Redekop-Fink, and Russell Standing . The University of Manitoba annually awards two Leonard Heaton Memorial Scholarships and honors the music educator with a Leonard Heaton Room .
