Dauphin is a small town in the Canadian province of Manitoba with around 8251 inhabitants. The place is located on the prairies, which include Manitoba and the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta . There are many farms and fields in the immediate vicinity, most of which are used to grow grain. The Riding Mountain National Park stretches to the south and Dauphin Lake to the northeast .
history
Dauphin was originally a fort called Fort Dauphin. It was founded in 1741 on the banks of Dauphin Lake by La Vérendrye. With the construction of the railway in 1896, the settlement of the current local area began.
The current location of the place differs from the location of the fort and the old Dauphin. In 1883 the area was settled and Old Dauphin was founded by David McIntosh, who opened a store in 1896.
Between 1896 and 1898 many Ukrainians came to Dauphin, traces of which are still visible today. Among the approximately 13 churches of different faiths and population groups there is a Ukrainian Catholic Church. The Dauphin National Ukrainian Festival is also held every year , which is one of the largest alongside the Dauphin Country Festival .
Social policy experiment
In the mid-1970s, poor families received an unconditional basic income :
“Beginning in 1974, Pierre Trudeau 's Liberals and Manitoba's first elected New Democratic Party government gave money to every person and family in Dauphin who fell below the poverty line. Under the program — called “ Mincome ” —about 1,000 families received monthly checks.
Unlike welfare, which only certain individuals qualified for, the guaranteed minimum income project was open to everyone. It was the first — and to this day, only — time that Canada has ever experimented with such an open-door social assistance program. "
Culture and religion
Dauphin is a place that is characterized by many cultural differences. On the one hand, descendants of the European settlers and descendants of the Cree Indians live there . On the other hand, immigrants from various countries around the world also live there. This means that over 13 churches and religious communities are represented in Dauphin.
