Emerson is a small town in the south of the province of Manitoba in Canada . The city was named after the American philosopher and writer Ralph Waldo Emerson . The city is located on the east bank of the Red River of the North , just north of the border with the United States and at the point where the province of Manitoba and the US states of Minnesota and North Dakota meet. Formerly an important rail link between the United States and Canada ran past the city, on the trains Great Northern Railway (now BNSF Railway) and Soo Line Railroad as well as the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways passed. There is a primary school and a secondary school in the city near Dominion City.
