Mairie Bief |
Bief is a French municipality with 114 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Bief is at 362 m , four kilometers west of Saint-Hippolyte and about 21 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (Mömpelgard, beeline). The village extends in the Jura , in a valley widening of the Doubs (Dub) at the mouth of the village stream Bief, between the heights of the Lomont chain in the north and Fleurey in the south.
The area of the 3.81 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The northern border runs along the Dub, which flows here to the west through a flat valley depression that is no more than 500 meters wide. He draws an arc below Bief and then turns north to Montbéliard. From the course of the river, the community area extends southward over the valley lowlands and the adjacent steep, predominantly wooded slopes, some of which are criss-crossed by ledges, up to the edge of the heights of Saussaye and Neuvier . Bief's highest elevation is reached here at 660 m. The lower half of the Bief catchment area also belongs to the municipality.
Neighboring municipalities of Bief are Noirefontaine and Liebvillers in the north, Saint-Hippolyte in the east, Fleurey in the south and Les Terres-de-Chaux and Dampjoux in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Bief was part of the domain of Châtillon-sous-Maîche. Together with Franche-Comté (Free County of Burgundy), the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Until well into the 20th century, Bief was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, some arable and fruit growing). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. However, many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The community has good transport connections. It is located near the D437 departmental road that leads from Montbéliard through the Doubstal to Maîche . There are other road connections with Les Terres-de-Chaux and Dampjoux.
