Arbouans is a French municipality with 945 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . The municipality belongs to the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération municipal association .

geography

Arbouans is located at 320  m , about two kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the basin of Montbéliard, on the northern edge of the Doubs valley , at the foot of the Côte and on the northern edge of the foothills of the Jura (Bois de Voujeaucourt).

The area of the 1.32 km² municipal area covers a section of the basin of Montbéliard on the southern edge of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The southern border runs along the Doubs, which flows to the west through a valley about one kilometer wide. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends northwards over the flat valley and the adjacent steep slope of the Côte (20 to 30 m high) to the plateau-like hill that separates the broad river valleys of the Doubs and Allan . The highest point in Arbouans is reached here at 352 m.

Neighboring municipalities to Arbouans are Montbéliard in the north, Audincourt in the east, Voujeaucourt in the south and Courcelles-lès-Montbéliard in the west.

history

The area of Arbouans was cleared and reclaimed in the 12th century by monks from the Belchamp monastery , which was on the opposite side of the Doubs. Arbouans is first mentioned in a document in 1294 under the name Arboens . The name Arbohans has been handed down from 1447 . At the time of its first mention, Arbouans belonged to the Cusance lordship, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard. During the Thirty Years War , the village was set on fire in 1635.

With the annexation of the county of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) , Arbouans finally came into French hands in 1793. Like the other communities in the Montbéliard agglomeration, Arbouans experienced an economic boom through industrialization from the second half of the 19th century. In 1930 an electrical engineering company and later a boiler construction company set up shop in Arbouans.

population

With 945 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Arbouans is one of the smaller communities in the Doubs department. In the first half of the 20th century, the population increased significantly until 1962 (sixfold increase in population). This was followed by a period of stagnation, or after 1975 a decline of 10%. The 1980s were again characterized by population growth (25% until 1990). Since then, the number of inhabitants has decreased slightly again. Today the settlement area of Arbouans has grown together almost seamlessly with those of Montbéliard and Audincourt.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Arbouans was an agricultural community. Then industry and trade settled in the Doubs valley plain. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses in Arbouans as well as many retail shops for daily needs. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the other communities of the Montbéliard agglomeration. Arbouans is the location of a large sports and leisure zone with seven soccer fields, several tennis, boules and baseball fields.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road from Montbéliard to Audincourt. The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses and cuts through the municipality, is about one and a half kilometers away. Another road connection is with Courcelles-lès-Montbéliard. Arbouans is connected to the city of Montbéliard and the surrounding communities by a bus line. Part of the slopes of the Montbéliard-Courcelles airfield (built in 1930) are located in the municipality.
