São Sebastião da Pedreira is a Portuguese municipality ( freguesia ) in the 3rd Bairro of the capital Lisbon . It is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Campolide , Nossa Senhora de Fátima , São Jorge de Arroios , Coração de Jesus and São Mamede . The freguesia has existed since 1601, its name refers to a chapel that used to be there in memory of Saint Sebastian ( São Sebastião ).

Parque Eduardo VII , the most important and largest part of the municipality

The most important and largest part of the municipality is the Parque Eduardo VII , whose namesake Edward VII. Visited Portugal in 1903. To symbolize the good relations between the United Kingdom and Portugal, the city council named the urban park after the British monarch. The Feira do Livro , a regional book fair, takes place there regularly . To the north is the Jardim Amália Rodrigues , as well as a park in memory of the famous fado singer .

The freguesia itself was or is very well known in Lisbon for having a high birth rate, as the Maternidade Alfredo da Costa maternity clinic is located in the eastern part of the district . The clinic, which opened in 1932, is one of a total of six Lisbon maternity clinics. On June 1, 1988, Child's Day , the local government erected a statue called “Mães” ( Mothers ) in front of the clinic, designed by the artist Rogério da Fonseca Machado .

In addition, the Casa Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves , an exhibition gallery built between 1904 and 1905, which mainly shows paintings by Portuguese artists of the 19th and 20th centuries such as Alfredo Keil , Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro , Tomás Anunciação and Miguel Ângelo Lupi . Also on the eastern side of Parque Eduardo VII is the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes , the 1929–1932 rebuilt Portugal pavilion for the 1922 World Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, which is primarily used for sporting and cultural events, such as the 1947 roller hockey world championship. It bears the name of the first Portuguese Olympic champion in long-distance running, Carlos Lopes .

The municipality is well integrated into the road system of the Portuguese capital through several large main roads. Particularly noteworthy are the major roads Avenida António Augusto de Aguia r, Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo , Avenida Duque d'Ávila as well as the Praça Marquês de Pombal , Praça Duque de Saldanha and Praça de Espanha .

Due to the geographically relatively central location of the Freguesia, several subway lines of the Lisbon Metro cross the municipality, the Linha Azul (blue line) and the Linha Amarela (yellow line). There are a total of five metro stations in the municipality, Marquês de Pombal , Parque , São Sebastião , Picoas and Saldanha . Numerous bus routes of the city Carris also open up the community.
