Parque is a metro station on the Linha Azul of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . It is located under the eponymous Parque Eduardo VII under Avenida Sidónio Pais in the municipality of Avenidas Novas , the neighboring stations are Marquês de Pombal and São Sebastião . The station went into operation on December 29, 1959 as one of the eleven stations of the Lisbon origin network.

History and architecture

The station, which was ceremoniously opened to public transport on December 29, 1959 - in connection with the complete commissioning of the Lisbon subway network between Restauradores , Sete Rios and Entre Campos - had the usual architectural design as the neighboring stations. The engineer Francisco Keil do Amaral and the artist Maria Keil designed the two 40-meter-long side platforms typical of Lisbon with a shared access hall in the north. The station walls were decorated with Portuguese azulejos , the colors of which were white, green, brown and black each forming triangles.

Due to the growing passenger flows from 1966, the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP 1972 decided to extend all platforms, the length of which varied between 40 and 70 meters, depending on the importance and the opening date, to 105 meters. In this context, the platforms of Parque train station were extended by 65 meters to the south in 1975.

As part of the so-called Plano de Expansão da Rede 1999 (plan to expand the network by 1999), the architectural upgrading of the stations took up a large area. That is why the Metropolitano de Lisboa decided in 1994 to award the contract to the artists Françoise Schein and Federica Matta, who were already experienced in the design of underground stations, as well as the architect Carlos Sanchez Jorge to redesign the Parque station . They decided on two dominant main themes for the train station, on the one hand the voyages of discovery in Portugal, which is still glorified in Portuguese history today, and human rights. While numerous azulejo murals (maps, ships, etc.) are available for the voyages of discovery, human rights are brought to mind by key terms from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights . They are written in black capital letters on blue, square tiles. This means that this station joins the ranks of other human rights stations such as those in Brussels , Berlin and Paris . In addition to these murals, the partially hidden wooden elements in the train station also play a major role. They represent the newly discovered, unknown beings on the journeys of the Portuguese conquistadors.

In addition to the work of Mattas, Scheins and Jorges, in 1995 the sculptor João Cutileiro designed a memorial for Aristides de Sousa Mendes , who was the Portuguese consul general in Bordeaux thanks to the visas he issued to an estimated 30,000 people in relation to the human rights to be read on the walls of various nationalities, including 10,000 Jews, saved lives. This is located in the entrance hall of the train station.

In the future it is planned to equip it with elevators. However, since the expansion of the existing lines is currently the main focus of the Lisbon Metro, the subsequent installation is currently not foreseeable in the short to medium term.
