Alfornelos Metro Station
Alfornelos is a metro station on the Linha Azul of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The train station is located under Praça Teófilo Braga in the Encosta do Sol municipality in the city of Amadora and thus outside of Lisbon. The neighboring stations are Amadora Este and Pontinha ; the station went into operation on May 15, 2004.
history
The Alfornelos subway station , located in the municipality of the same name, went into operation on May 15, 2004 in connection with the opening of the latest section of the Linha Azul ( Amadora Este - Pontinha ). This section is the first on the Linha Azul that goes beyond the city limits of Lisbon and the second on the Lisbon metro network, as the Campo Grande - Odivelas route opened almost three months earlier (on March 27, 2004).
The architect Alberto Barradas designed the station . Despite different architects, the basic concepts of the youngest underground train stations of the Lisbon Metro (Alfornelos, Amadora Este and Telheiras) are very similar. Like Amadora Este and Telheiras, Alfornelos station has a large, slightly rounded platform hall with two platforms. The mezzanine floor is located as a crossbar in the middle of the hall. The side platforms are 105 meters long and therefore designed for six-car groups. A north and a south entrance lead from the mezzanine to the above-ground square. With the construction, the station received three lifts.
Ana Vidigal was responsible for the artistic design . She chose a very special way of expressing her subject matter: For her goal of depicting the modern world of relationships, travel as well as arrival and departure, she designed large-scale works based on tiles for the eastern and western rear wall of the station and for the entrances. In the above-ground square (Praça Teófilo Braga) there is also a statue of the Portuguese president of the same name , a gift from the metro operator ( Metropolitano de Lisboa, EPE ) to the municipality of Alfornelos.
