history

Santa Apolónia subway station, which opened in December 2007

The Lisbon metro , opened in 1956, never had a direct connection to Santa Apolónia station until 2007 . There was a tram connection only until around 1990, since then the last section between Rua de Alfândega and the train station was closed, the tracks are still visible in the asphalt to this day. Therefore, for years there was only a connection with buses or with regional trains themselves, which were only slightly suitable for Lisbon residents.

However, since the U-shaped underground line between the Jardim Zoológico and Alvalade underground stations was split into two separate lines ( Linha Azul and Linha Verde ), it was planned to extend one line each to one of the two large stations on the banks of the Tejo . Since 1998 the Linha Verde has been going to the Cais do Sodré station , and since then the Linha Azul has also been going to the Santa Apolónia station. Construction work began in 1997, but dragged on because of the very complicated subsoil and severe water ingress. Ultimately, the operating company of the Lisbon Metro, the Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP , was able to put the line between the Baixa-Chiado train stations and the Santa Apolónia train station into operation on December 19, 2007.

The architect Leopoldo Rosa designed two sober side platforms for the underground station, with light blue light elements and blue wall colors to create a reference to the nearby Tejo . The artist José Santa-Bárbara designed the mezzanine floor with the azulejos customary at Portuguese railway stations and tried to create another, abstract reference to the neighboring station. The station is directly parallel to the railway station building, so there is direct access between the two modes of transport. The underground station also has an exit to the cruise ship terminal on the Tagus.

Nine months after the opening of the station, the operating company found that instead of the planned 8,000 passengers, 15,000 passengers use the station a day.
