Cais do Sodré is a metro station on the Linha Verde (green line) of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station is located below the railway station of the same name under Avenida 24 de Julho in the municipality of Misericórdia . The Linha Verde trains end / start in the station , the only neighboring station is Baixa-Chiado . The station went into operation on April 18, 1998.

history

After its construction, the Cais do Sodré station was always an important transfer point in the Portuguese capital. Nevertheless, passengers coming from the Linha de Cascais could only get further into the city center with the Carris trams and buses, because the suburban train was - opposite earlier planning - never extended.

In 1990 the operating company of the Lisbon metro, the Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP , decided on the so-called Plano de Expansão da Rede 1999 (plan to expand the network by 1999). He planned to convert the previously existing "U-shaped" underground line with a branch into three new underground lines. The two branches of the line towards Sete Rios and Entre Campos were separated as early as 1995, and the yellow line ( Rotunda - Campo Grande ) and the blue line ( Pontinha - Campo Grande , via Rossio ) were created. In order to quasi dissolve the lower curve of the “U”, the Metropolitano de Lisboa decided to extend the two sections of the route (the Ast Pontinha - Restauradores and Campo Grande - Rossio ) separately to the new crossing station in Chiado Baixa-Chiado . Both should then be extended to the important suburban train stations Santa Apolónia and Cais do Sodré .

The design for the new subway station, which is located directly under the tracks of the Linha de Cascais, was designed by the architect Nuno Teotónio Pereira. He designed a very wide and high platform hall; a long corridor equipped with treadmills is located directly above the tracks. Typically for Lisbon subway terminus, the subway station has three platform tracks on a central platform and a side platform. For the artistic design of the station, the operating company selected the painter Pedro Morais , who put some drawings by the surrealist António Dacosta on large tile panels parallel to the platform tracks. They show 24 oversized rabbits with a clock in their paws, they are supposed to remind of the rabbit in the fairy tale Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The sentence “Estou atrasado”, in German “I'm too late”, is written in capital letters under the numerous rabbits.

Since April 18, 1998, the trains of the new Linha Verde (green line) have been running to Cais do Sodré station . Since then, the station has become one of the most important in the Lisbon metro network. While the green line has now been extended to a train station on the Tejo, the construction work on the Linha Azul (blue line) took much longer than expected due to water ingress. The counterpart could only be put into operation on December 19, 2007.
