Areeiro is a metro station on the Linha Verde of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The train station is located directly below Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro in the Lisbon municipality of Areeiro . The neighboring stations are Roma and Alameda . The station went into operation on June 18, 1972. There is officially, despite a longer walk of around 500 meters, a transfer option to the regional and suburban train station Roma-Areeiro .

history

Areeiro metro station officially opened on June 18, 1972 as part of the extension from Anjos to Alvalade . This part was the last of the second construction phase of the Lisbon Metro to be completed. At this point in time, a network with two branches of a total of 20 stations had been created within sixteen years.

The architect Dinís Gomes was responsible for all of the stations in the last construction phase , following the standardized station design by João Falcão e Cunha , who had designed most of the existing stations. He also chose two 70-meter-long platforms at Areeiro station, which were designed for four-car trains. The station was given a vestibule and three exits on the north side, which open onto the above-ground square Praça de Areeiro (today Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro ) and onto Avenida Padre Manuel de Nóbrega . The artist Maria Keil was responsible for the design of the station . She chose azulejos with green and white vertical stripes on which gold-colored, interwoven wavy lines are depicted. The station concourse is much lower in the northern part than in the southern part, as the road tunnel of Avenida João XXI. runs at right angles to the subway line.

Not much has changed since the station opened, only the line designation and possible route destinations differ. Today the station is part of the Linha Verde (Green Line) between Telheiras and Cais do Sodré .

In order to be able to cope with the increasing passenger flows on the line, the Metropolitano de Lisboa decided to extend the stations of the green line as part of a general renovation from 70 meters to 105 meters in order to accommodate six-car compositions, as on the other lines, to be able to use. As part of this, the station is to be artistically redesigned and given elevators, for example in the neighboring Roma and Alvalade stations . The work should start in 2009 and be finished in 2010, but did not start until August 2011. Due to financial difficulties, the construction work has not yet been completed.
