The station is located under the square of the same name in the municipality of Santa Maria Maior . The neighboring stations of the train station are Martim Moniz and Baixa-Chiado . The station went into operation on January 27, 1963. It is an important traffic junction in the Portuguese capital; Contrary to the name, there is no direct access to the Rossio regional train station .

history

After the Lisbon city administration had opened the original network between Restauradores and the two branches to Entre Campos and Sete Rios in 1959, the extension to the new business centers in Alvalade was also on the agenda. A first step was to extend the metro by one station in a long curve to the new Rossio metro station. The station was opened on January 27, 1963, so that all trains could now end one station further. Joãa Falcão e Cunha took on the design of the station, and Maria Keil was responsible for the artistic design, as was the case with the other stations . At Rossio, she opted for azulejos in green and blue colors with various rosette motifs.

During the construction of the station, numerous archaeological excavations took place, with numerous finds relevant to the city's history being excavated. These included, for example, the remains of the Hospital de Todos-os-Santos ( All Saints' Hospital ), which was previously located there and which stood on the site of today's Rossio until the earthquake in 1755.

Terminus remained Rossio but not long, in 1966 or 1972, the operating company could Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP operation by the Alvalade expand.

As the number of passengers increased steadily over the years, the system of a large "U" with two branches turned out to be unfavorable, so that the operating company, together with the city administration, issued the Plano de Expansão da Rede 1999 (plan to expand the network until 1999), in which the separation of the network into three separate lines was planned. The two branches in the direction of Sete Rios and Entre Campos were already formed in 1995, and a yellow line ( Rotunda - Campo Grande ) and a blue line ( Pontinha - Campo Grande ) were created. In April 1998 the Metropolitano de Lisboa extended the Campo Grande - Rossio branch via the new Baixa-Chiado underground station to the large transfer point on the Tejo Cais do Sodré - the green line was created. This resulted in three independent metro lines (yellow, blue and green lines). The line operation between Restauradores and Rossio was completely abandoned in this context, but an existing track connection is occasionally used for operational trips.

As part of the renovation of the inner-city metro stations, the Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP, had the station renovated and redesigned in 1998. The architect Leopoldo Rosa was responsible for the renovation , the artists Artur Rosa and Helena Almeida took over the artistic direction. Rosa, painter and sculptor of abstract art , designed four different large statues made of steel, each standing on the stairs in the entrance hall. The painter Helena Almeida designed several long hairstyles with yellow and blue stripes on which a running woman can be seen. Due to its excellent inner-city and therefore important location, the station has had elevators since 1998.
