Baixa-Chiado , also Baixa / Chiado , is a metro station on the Linha Azul (blue line) and Linha Verde (green line) of the Lisbon Metro , the metro network of the Portuguese capital . The station is located under Largo do Chiado or Rua do Crucifixo in the municipality of Santa Maria Maior , the double name of the station indicates that it is on the border between the two unofficial districts of Chiado and Baixa . The neighboring stations of the train station are Restauradores , Terreiro do Paço , Cais do Sodré and Rossio . The station went into operation on April 25, 1998 for the Linha Verde and on August 8 for the Linha Azul , it completed the separation of the original one line into two lines ( Linha Azul and Linha Verde ). Baixa-Chiado is now one of the most important subway stations on the Lisbon metro network and is one of the few in the metro network to have elevators.

history

The number of passengers on the Lisbon metro increased significantly over the years, also due to numerous expansions, so that a subway network with several branches made no sense and additional capacities were necessary in order to be able to absorb the future growth. Therefore, from the existing network of a large "U" with two line branches (towards Sete Rios and Entre Campos ) in the west - according to the adopted Plano de Expansão da Rede 1999 (plan to expand the network by 1999) - three lines should be created in the future. The two branches of the line towards Sete Rios and Entre Campos were separated as early as 1995 and the yellow line ( Rotunda - Campo Grande ) and the blue line ( Pontinha - Campo Grande , via Rossio ) were created. In order to quasi dissolve the lower curve of the "U", the Metropolitano de Lisboa decided to extend the two sections of the route (the Ast Pontinha - Restauradores and Campo Grande - Rossio ) separately to the new crossing station in Chiado Baixa-Chiado . In April 1998, the route from Campo Grande was therefore extended via Baixa-Chiado to the large transfer point on the Tejo Cais do Sodré - the green line was created. The Baixa-Chiado station was thus at least partially opened on April 25, 1998. Originally the other branch of the route (coming from Pontinha) was supposed to be expanded quickly, but water ingress prevented a quick extension of the route to Lisbon's main train station Santa Apolónia . Therefore, on August 8, 1998 , the Metropolitano de Lisboa first opened the new section Restauradores - Baixa-Chiado . While the trains on the green lines continued to Cais do Sodré , the trains on the blue line ended here.

Álvaro Siza Vieira , who comes from Matosinhos , was won over for the new inner-city train station, and Ângelo de Sousa took over the artistic design . Siza Vieira designed a large station with a central platform and two side platforms, because here too the principle of the two side platforms of the Lisbon Metro was to be pursued. The station, which is 45 meters below the surface, has two large platform halls (each for the Linha Verde and Linha Azul trains ) in a north-south direction, a large passage and several smaller openings between the two in an east-west direction Halls make it possible to switch between the two lines, but also represent the connection to the surface. Ângelo de Sousa was very reluctant to design the station, especially the small, white stripes dominate the station - so the station is very similar to the typical stations of the Paris metro. He only had geometric shapes attached to the exits that are reminiscent of the art of Islam.

Since December 2007, Baixa-Chiado is no longer an end point for the blue line. After more than ten years of construction, the operating company was able to put the extension via Terreiro do Paço to Santa Apolónia into operation. Nevertheless, the station still has sweeping systems for flexible use of the trains.

As part of a four-year cooperation between the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa, EPE and Portugal Telecom , the station was renamed “Baixa-Chiado PT Bluestation” in September 2011. This went hand in hand with a complete re-labeling of all station signs as well as the installation of blue light. Furthermore, there has been free internet since then as well as a kind of train station television in the subway station. The city parliament of the Portuguese capital sharply criticized the procedure. Financial information regarding the contract was not disclosed.
