Carnide is a metro station on the Linha Azul of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The train station is located at the intersection of Avenida Marechal Teixeira Rebelo and Rua Guiomar Torrezão in the Lisbon municipality of Carnide . The neighboring stations are Colégio Militar / Luz and Pontinha ; the station went into operation on October 18, 1997.

history

The Carnide underground station is part of the Colégio Militar / Luz - Pontinha section, opened in 1997 , with which the Lisbon metro reached the city limits for the first time. This extension was also designed by the city to enable the particularly populous districts in the north-west of Lisbon to be connected by rail.

The operating company of the metro commissioned Sérgio Gomes with the design of the station, which is based on the standard image of the typical Lisbon metro stations. The station was given two 105-meter-long side platforms over which a middle, oversized crossbar is located, which forms the mezzanine. From there four exits lead to the road surface. For the first time on the Linha Azul, the construction of the station also included the equipping of elevator systems , whereby the disadvantage of the side platforms becomes noticeable: the station has a total of three elevators (from each side platform to the mezzanine, from the mezzanine to the street surface).

José de Guimarães was selected for the artistic design of the station , who worked on it between 1992 and 1997. In view of his long stay in Africa, he chose very strong and clear colors, which should represent a reference to the indigenous peoples there. He used the colors on the one hand in various tile images on the mezzanine floor and on the other hand in the colors for several fluorescent tube installations that can be seen above the platforms within sight of the mezzanine floor. According to de Guimarães, the colorful neon tubes are intended to remind of the miracle of light that can be found in the neighboring church Igreja de São Lourenço , which is best known as Igreja da Luz (Church of Light). The fluorescent tube installations are divided into three complete works, which thematically are also intended to be reminiscent of the Portuguese tradition of seafaring: A Vida ea Morte (Life and the Gate), As Grandes Viagens (The Great Voyages) and A Criação do Mundo (The creation of the world).
