Laranjeiras is a metro station on the Linha Azul of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station is located at the intersection of Estrada das Laranjeiras with Rua Xavier de Araújo in the municipality of São Domingos de Benfica . The neighboring stations of the train station are Altos do Moinho and Jardim Zoológico . The station went into operation on October 14, 1988 as part of the extension of the Linha Azul to Colégio Militar / Luz .

history

During the years of the Estado Novo and the associated economic crisis in Portugal, the city of Lisbon was unable to expand the metro network according to demand - it left it with the extension of the platforms of numerous stations. However, after the dictatorship was over in 1974 and the economic situation in Portugal gradually improved, the city and the operating company also began to extend the network. The main goal was to develop the densely populated neighborhoods in the Benfica district.

The new northern section of the metro between Sete Rios (today Jardim Zoológico) and Colégio Militar (today Colégio Militar / Luz) went into operation on October 14, 1988, and with it the Laranjeiras station. António J. Mendes was responsible for the design of the station , but the three stations are very similar. All of them have two 105 meter long side platforms with a relatively low ceiling; the exits are in the middle. The operating company won over the painter Rolando Sá Nogueira and the sculptor Fernando Conduto for the artistic design . Both of them based their design on the station name Laranjeiras, or orange trees in English, and designed numerous tile images with orange trees and the corresponding fruits. The tiles come from the Fábrica Rugo.

Since then, little has happened at the station itself. Since the expansion of the network has priority in the Lisbon Metro, retrofitting with elevators is only likely in the medium term.
